In a letter to me in 1967, he said that his work ‘stood for that’ and that he ‘wanted the last laugh’ and was entitled to it. 웹Basil Bunting was born March 1, 1900 in Scotswood-on-Tyne, Northumberland. He spent his formative years studying at two Quaker schools, an upbringing which later led to his adoption of a pacifist stance during World War I. In 1918 he was arrested as a conscientious objector and served more than a year in prison after refusing to comply with a notice of call-up.
